GianToucan makes three distinct cover styles for truck beds — hard tri-fold, flip-up hard, and retractable — and each one serves a different type of owner. Picking the wrong style isn't just an inconvenience; it means a return. Here's how to match the cover to how you actually use your truck, then confirm the right fitment for your specific bed.

Hard Tri-Fold Covers

The tri-fold style divides the bed into three equal panels that fold accordion-style toward the cab. GianToucan's tri-fold line — seven SKUs spanning F-150, Ram, Silverado/Sierra, and Maverick beds — uses fiberglass panels over an aluminum subframe. Each cover supports up to 400 lbs of evenly distributed load, which is a meaningful number if you're stepping on it to reach gear at the front of the bed or using it as a work platform.

This is the right choice if you want a hard cover, need the load capacity, and don't regularly require full bed access on short notice. Folding all three panels back takes maybe ten seconds and props them against the cab, giving you roughly two-thirds of the bed exposed. You won't get the full bed clear in one motion the way you do with the other styles. If most of your cargo fits in the rear two-thirds of the bed anyway, you'll never notice the difference. The tri-fold is also the most common entry point for buyers moving up from a soft cover — same no-drill install, more rigidity.

One critical fitment note for Ram buyers: GianToucan makes separate tri-fold covers for the Ram 1500 Classic (model GTLP-1119, covering 2002–2026) and the Ram 1500 New Body Style (model GTLP-1083, covering 2019–2026). These are not interchangeable. The Classic and New Body Style have different bed geometries, and the wrong cover won't seal correctly. Check your truck's build year and confirm whether your 1500 is Classic or New Body Style before ordering — Ram ran both body styles in production simultaneously during 2019.

Flip-Up Hard Covers

The flip-up style is a single rigid panel hinged at the front of the bed. GianToucan's flip-up line uses aircraft-grade aluminum alloy with carbon fiber reinforcement and operates across a –40°F to 175°F temperature range. The hinge design opens vertically with one hand from the tailgate, clearing the full bed length completely. That's the key reason to choose this style: nothing blocks the cab end of the bed when the cover is open.

This is the right choice if you haul long or awkward cargo regularly — full sheets of plywood, bikes with the front wheel on, lumber that has to slide all the way forward. It's also the cleaner option aesthetically: one unbroken panel instead of fold lines running across the bed. The trade-off is that you can't partially open it. With a tri-fold you can expose just the rear third; the flip-up is either closed or all the way open. If partial access matters to you — say, grabbing a bag out of the back without exposing everything — a tri-fold handles that better.

GianToucan's flip-up line covers 2020–2026 Silverado/Sierra 1500 (5.8ft and 6.6ft beds), 2020–2026 Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 HD (6.9ft bed), 2015–2026 F-150 (6.5ft bed), and 2022–2026 Toyota Tundra (5.5ft bed with Deck Rail System). None of the Silverado/Sierra flip-up covers fit CarbonPro beds — that's an explicit exclusion in the product documentation. If your Silverado came with a CarbonPro carbon-fiber bed, none of the GianToucan flip-up covers will work.

Retractable Covers

The retractable style uses aluminum slats that roll back into a canister mounted at the front of the bed. GianToucan's retractable line is the only style that gives you genuinely incremental access — you can open it six inches to grab something from the front, or roll it fully back for complete bed access, or lock it at any point in between. The dual-position locking mechanism means you can secure the cover whether it's fully closed or partially open, which is useful for cargo that sticks up above the bed rails.

The canister is a design trade-off worth knowing about upfront. It mounts at the head of the bed and stays there permanently, taking up roughly 6–8 inches of bed length at the cab end. On a 5.5ft bed that's a real chunk of usable space. On a 6.4ft or 6.6ft bed it matters less. The operating temperature range is –22°F to 140°F — narrower than the flip-up's –40°F to 175°F range, which matters if you're in a climate that sees extreme heat or hard winters. GianToucan's retractable covers include anodized aluminum T-slot rails on both sides, so you can mount crossbars or accessory racks without removing the cover itself.

This style is the right call if you frequently need variable-depth access, want to run aftermarket rails, or just prefer the cleaner visual of a slat cover over fold panels. It's the mid-tier option in the GianToucan lineup — more mechanical complexity than the tri-fold, less structural rigidity than the flip-up.

Bed-Length Fitment Reference

Every GianToucan cover is engineered for a specific bed length in inches, not just a truck model. The same truck can come from the factory in two or three different bed configurations. Confirm your exact bed length before ordering.

*The Silverado/Sierra 5.8ft tri-fold (GTLP-1031) fits 2019 New Body Style trucks but does NOT fit 2019 1500 LD/LT trim levels or any CarbonPro bed. If you have a 2019 Silverado 1500 LD or LT, verify your exact trim before ordering — this is the most common fitment question for this SKU. None of the flip-up covers fit CarbonPro beds regardless of year.

If you have a Ram with a RamBox — the integrated storage compartment built into the bed rails — none of the GianToucan covers listed above are compatible. The RamBox rails sit higher and wider than standard bed rails, and a cover engineered for a standard rail won't seal against them correctly.

Roll-up mats and inflatable mats are both sold as home grappling solutions, but they behave differently on the ground — and the difference matters depending on what you're actually doing on them. GianToucan's TW05 is a traditional 1.25"-thick roll-up mat. Here's an honest look at where that format wins, where it doesn't, and who should buy which type.

How Each Format Works

A roll-up mat is a solid foam core wrapped in a textured PVC shell, cut to size and stored by rolling into a cylinder. It sits flat on any hard floor, doesn't require any inflation or electrical equipment, and the surface doesn't change based on temperature or air pressure. The GianToucan TW05 measures 10ft × 10ft at 1.25 inches thick and weighs 55 lbs — that's a meaningful surface you can roll out, train on, and roll back up without tools or setup time beyond the unrolling itself.

An inflatable mat uses air chambers as its cushioning layer. The surface inflates to a set firmness via an electric pump, typically taking 5–15 minutes to reach usable pressure. The appeal is lighter shipping weight and, theoretically, softer landings at higher inflation firmness. The practical reality is more complicated: air pressure varies with temperature, which means a mat inflated in a 70°F house will feel noticeably different on a cold winter morning in an unheated garage. Seams can develop slow leaks. And the surface tension of an air-filled mat under your feet feels fundamentally different from a foam-core mat — more like standing on a partially inflated pool toy than a firm training surface.

Impact Absorption at 1.25 Inches

Mat thickness is the most debated spec in home training, and the practical answer is that 1.25 inches is appropriate for drilling, guard work, and positional sparring — not for full-speed judo throws or takedowns at competition intensity. That's an honest description of what GianToucan's TW05 handles. Falls from guard passes, shrimping drills, mount escapes, single-leg setups — all fine. A hip throw at full extension onto a hard concrete floor through 1.25 inches of foam is a different calculation, and anyone training with throws regularly should look at thicker surfaces (1.5–2 inches) or dedicated crash pads for that specific application.

Inflatable mats at high firmness can feel harder than a foam-core mat of similar stated thickness — the air resists compression differently than foam does. At low firmness they feel softer but become unstable underfoot for stand-up work. There's no standard firmness rating across inflatable mat brands, so buyer experience varies more than it does with a 1.25"-foam specification.

Storage Footprint

This is where roll-up mats are genuinely better for most home setups. The TW05 rolls into a cylinder roughly 13 inches in diameter and 120 inches long — it stands in a corner, slides under a bed frame in a basement, or leans against a garage wall. It doesn't occupy floor space when you're not training. A 10'×10' inflatable mat, deflated, collapses into a folded bundle that's often larger than people expect once the air is out, plus you need somewhere to store the pump and the inflation hose.

Unrolling and rolling back up the TW05 takes under two minutes. Inflating a 10'×10' mat from flat with an electric pump typically runs 8–12 minutes. If you're training for 45 minutes and the setup/teardown cycle adds 20+ minutes, that's friction that compounds over weeks and months. Most home gym athletes who drop sessions don't do it because they don't want to train — they do it because the barrier to getting started is too high.

Surface Grip and Discipline Fit

The TW05 uses a textured PVC surface. That texture is important: it provides enough friction for your feet and knees to grip during BJJ ground work and wrestling setups without the surface being abrasive on skin during rolls. It's the same basic surface design used across the traditional home training mat category — not a tatami (woven) surface, which some judoka prefer, but appropriate for grappling, BJJ, and kids' wrestling practice.

Inflatable mat surfaces vary significantly by manufacturer. Some use smooth vinyl; others use textured covers. Smooth vinyl moves faster underfoot, which can work for stand-up wrestling styles but makes hip escapes and knee-on-belly transitions feel slippery. If you're primarily doing BJJ, the textured surface on a foam-core mat like the TW05 is more discipline-appropriate than most inflatable alternatives currently on the market.

Who Should Choose Each Format

• Roll-up mat (TW05): Best for BJJ, wrestling, and judo drilling in a garage or basement where setup speed and storage convenience matter. Handles daily use without degradation. The right choice for consistent home training sessions on a permanent surface — no pump, no pressure management, no leaks.
• Inflatable mat: Worth considering if you need to transport the mat frequently — to a friend's house, a park, or a class. Lighter shipping weight and compressible storage make logistics easier when the mat needs to move. Less ideal as a primary daily training surface.
• Neither format: If you train throws at full intensity or practice judo ukemi from a standing position regularly, 1.25 inches of foam isn't enough cushioning and most inflatable mats at portable sizes won't be either. Purpose-built crash pads or a thicker dedicated mat surface (1.5–2 inches) are the right tools for that specific application.

The GianToucan TW05 is also available in 8'×8' and 5'×10' configurations if the full 10'×10' footprint doesn't fit your space. The 8'×8' drops to 64 square feet — enough for solo drilling and guard positional work, tight for partner training with active movement. The 5'×10' is a narrow rectangle better suited to stand-up technique work and solo mat drilling than partner grappling. At 55 lbs, the 10'×10' version is manageable for most adults to move alone, but it takes two people to roll it out evenly on the first few uses until the mat relaxes and lies flat on its own.
